Why Some People Develop Eating Disorders But Others Don’t?

June 25, 2019 by Kersten Kimura Leave a Comment

Have you thought about why some people develop eating disorders or disordered eating patterns, while others don't?

If you've struggled with disordered eating habits, you may have thought about this question.

After all, a lot of people go on diets but not all of them develop an eating disorders or disordered eating habits.

Most people are on social media but not everyone who sees lean, 10% BF bodies get to work to achieve the same.

What's Your Personality Like?

People can be exposed to the exact information and be in the same environment but react completely differently to it. This is where our personalities come into play…

Does the following describe you?

⚡️Perfectionism
⚡️Obsessive tendencies – doing everything at 101%
⚡️Fear of rejection
⚡️Fear of upsetting others
⚡️Need to control everything

⚡️Playing safe, avoiding risks

If a person like this starts a diet, she goes allllll in.

If she sees a “perfect body”, she has the “no excuses” mentality and she makes sure she achieves that body.

She has her eyes on the prize and she keeps going, no matter what, until she burns out… Enter hypothalamic amenorrhea, adrenal fatigue (interviews with Danny-J and Cari Li), thyroid issues, anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder…

To get out of an eating disorder and over training cycle, we don't only need to start eating more and exercising less… These things are important, but we also need to get to work on WHO WE ARE.

We need to…

✅ Accept that not everything is always going to be perfect

✅ Be okay with the fact that sometimes people do get upset, and not take it personally

✅ Not try to control everything, from our body weight to other people's perception of us

✅ Be okay with not knowing every next step and TRUST that we figure it out.

The person I described earlier – perfectionist, going all in – was totally me years ago! Not anymore. I'm way more relaxed now 😊 🧘‍♀️ What about you – did the personality traits above describe you?

If you need help with learning how to eat flexibly, mindfully and healthfully without dieting, I can help you.
